Facial Pain or Trigeminal Neuralgia (Tic Douloureux)

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition
characterized by facial pain along any one or more branches (three
in all) of the "tri"geminal nerve.
Pain can occur spontaneously, but it is usually set off by touching
a certain spot or even by toothbrushing or chewing. Although the
pain can be excruciating, it is usually episodic, though some sufferers
have gone so far as to have the nerve cut in order to eliminate
the pain.
This drastic measure often results in permanent facial discomfort
and sagging, and conventional medical protocol sees it as a last
resort, preferring instead to prescribe anti-seizure drugs or anti-depressants.
Fortunately, holistic medicine, especially acupuncture, has a great
deal to offer those who suffer from trigeminal neuralgia. As with
any patient, it is important to understand what is going on overall
with a patient as well as what may be more immediately causing the
nerve compression.
Is there a sinus problem? Disease of the jaw or teeth? In my own
practice, I find that many sufferers are elderly and have poor circulation
in the head area, so that, in addition to acupuncture, I often prescribe
herbs that improve blood circulation. Some of these patients have
reported the "side benefit" of improved mental function and energy,
definitely a plus!

condition that is causing you concern and you would like to know
