Infertility and Oriental Medicine

by: Dianne Mallik LAc, CCH

Infertility is an area that has become increasingly high tech in the realm of conventional Western medicine. We have all heard about in vitro fertilization and how it has often been a Godsend to childless couples.

There are many cases, however, in which "low tech" Oriental medicine, in the form of acupuncture and herbs, can be very helpful for women having problems with conception. Since space to go into detail is limited, let me mention two representative, successful cases:

Patient A was a 28-year-old female who had already undergone two surgeries for endometriosis, and was facing a third, since the endometriosis had reoccurred and was not only causing her considerable pain, but was also preventing her from conceiving.

Oriental Medicine considers endometriosis a form of "Blood Stagnation," and treatment--a combination of acupuncture and herbs--is geared towards enhancing circulation and dissolving masses. Within a short period of time, Patient A's pain was considerably reduced, then eliminated. Eventually she was able to conceive, and she birthed a healthy girl without the aid of any other intervention.

Patient B's presentation was entirely different. She had tried in vitro but without success. An Oriental Medical exam found this 35-year-old patient to be easily fatigued; very sensitive to cold; suffering from minor digestive complaints; exhibiting a pale complexion, tongue, and nailbeds; and something of a worrier in nature.

In terms of Oriental Medicine, Patient B was Qi (energy) and Blood Deficient, making it difficult for her to get and stay pregnant. Patient B was treated with an individualized protocol of acupuncture and herbs, and when she went into her next in vitro, she succeeded in getting and staying pregnant. She's due to give birth in six weeks.
