Acupuncture Helps Patients Recover from
the Paralysis of Stroke

  by: Dianne Mallik LAc, CCH

Numerous studies in recent years have all consistently shown the same results: Stroke patients receiving acupuncture in addition to traditional therapy improve significantly more than those who receive traditional therapy only, and there is a significant, positive, long-term effect.

In other words, stroke patients who receive acupuncture get back more function and retain this function over the long term. In his book, Dr. Rosenfeld's Guide to Alternative Medicine, Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, professor of clinical medicine at New York Hospital and Cornell Medical Center, explains how several studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of stroke, as well as in the treatment of paralysis from other causes, such as multiple sclerosis, Bell's palsy, and head and spinal-cord injuries.

Dr. Rosenfeld quotes what the doctors concluded: "Acupuncture appears to be helpful in the treatment of paralysis due to central nervous system damage."

I am presently working with a patient recovering from a severe hemorrhagic stroke that completely paralyzed his left side. When he was discharged from the hospital and placed in a skilled nursing facility, his doctor informed the family that he would be at the facility a minimum of a month before he would be ready for transfer to a rehab center.

With the help of acupuncture, he was ready in less than two weeks, and since then he has recovered speech, swallow, and is gradually getting return of sensation and function on his left side.

Every patient responds differently, of course, but controlled studies have shown that acupuncture produces a significant and measurable improvement in the physical rehabilitation of stroke survivors.
