The Pain of Sciatica

by: Dianne Mallik LAc, CCH

The term "sciatica" refers to pain caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, which begins in the low back area, extends through the pelvis, goes down the leg, and ends where it branches into the foot.

This pain is most commonly caused by a herniated spinal disc in the low back, but it can also occur from muscle tension and spasming anywhere along the course of the sciatic nerve.

Some people will only feel pain in the low back area, often one-sided, whereas others will exerience pain that goes down into the hip, thigh, and even down into the calf and foot. If the pressure is severe, muscle weakness, numbness, and loss of feeling can occur.

Conventional treatment usually consists of pain relievers and muscle relaxants, although, as noted in the Merck Manual of Medical Information, "...their effectiveness hasn't been proved. The side effects of muscle relaxants may overshadow their benefits, particularly in the elderly." (1997 Home Ed, p. 328)

Fortunately acupuncture is extremely effective for most cases of sciatica, and there are no side effects. Acupuncture works to help sciatic pain in several ways.

First, it stimulates the production of endorphins, the body's natural pain killers. Second, it helps block the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Third, it increases circulation in the problem area and promotes tissue regeneration. Fourth, it effectively deactivates trigger points, which are overly sensitive spots beneath the skin that sometimes "trigger" pain or other symptoms along the course of the sciatic nerve.

Each person's response to acupuncture varies, but I have frequently treated acute cases of sciatica, typically caused by such activities as overlifting, bending, or straining, for which only one or two treatments were necessary.

Again, each case is unique, but acupuncture is an extremely effective tool in the treatment of sciatica.
